midwifery's ripples
Sometimes I think, a little disheartened, "How can a few natural births in a corner of Texas change this overwhelming world order?" I hope that the ripples outward from every woman who feels strengthened in her natural instincts, in her common sense and in her self confidence, by becoming a mother and by giving birth naturally will touch the world. Scientific rationalism, corporate power and a technological (sorry) male view, are so strong..... But the ripple of biological mothering instincts are persistent. I am optimistic. I know that there is really no choice for a human future on earth besides the force of nature from which we spring. It's only common sense!

I say doing your part in the world, your "life work" is like...Sprinkling water over a thirsty garden.
ReplyDeleteYou never really know which seed needs it the most, but you faithfully tend to the garden, because to your heart it is close. You toil over it long days and long nights. Against the pressures, the winds, the elements in sight, but you don't really care because your desire is to get it right.
And deep inside of you... you can sense the potential in the air, of what could be/should be...Such a beautiful dream, but the dreamer is rare.
And the garden is just seeds(now)nestled under the earth, but because of your great vision and passion for growth, one day (now or much later)you will see the fruit of your labor and this world will witness "The Great Creation" (and there will be no mistaking) it was... through the purpose you
saw in those little seeds!
Dinah, I tried to respond with a simple sentence, but the writer/poet in me kind of took over:)
Thank you Ebon'Nae for that beautiful comment!! Thank you Dinah for what you're doing for us all.
ReplyDeleteDear Dinah,
ReplyDeleteI am proof that one birth CAN ripple out into a tremendous wave of change. In 2001, I gave birth to my daughter Ananda at Lover´s Lane. I loved it became a doula, childbirth and breastfeeding educator. At the end of 2002, I moved to Brazil (a world leader in UnneCesareans) founded "Good Birth NGO" along with other moms and professionals, continued assisting at births. Since then I´ve spoken to thousands about the importance of changing birth - moms, university students, health professionals and government officials. I also had an amazing homebirth, caught my son myself in a city where 8 out of 10 women are having c-sections. It changed my life.
In gratitude,
Alessandra Godinho

ReplyDeleteHi Dinah!
ReplyDeleteI am writing a paper about midwifery here at Stanford for a course on cross-cultural competency in the medical field and took a look at your website and found your blog. Your birthing center certainly makes a difference in the world- you have taught me so many important lessons about being a healthcare provider and have helped so many women to have beautiful birthing experiences. Thank you thank you thank you! The summer I spent working at your birthing center was irreplaceable. I hope all is well!
Best wishes for you and the family,
Mica Esquenazi
